PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Mikis TheodorakisHelikon Concerto for Piano and Orchestra

Greek-German pianist Danae Doerken is delighted to present Theodorakis’s Helikon Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, a compelling early work that, though remaining partially unfinished, captivates with its bold synthesis of classical, folk, and modern musical languages. The concerto vividly evokes the resilience, struggles, and enduring spirit of the Greek people, offering audiences a rare and powerful glimpse into Theodorakis’s creative vision. The work can be performed as a standalone piece, allowing its distinctive character to shine, or paired with another concerto such as Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1 or No. 2 or Bach’s Piano Concerto in D minor to highlight striking contrasts in style, emotion, and historical context. Through this performance, Doerken brings both depth and dynamism to a work that bridges tradition and innovation, providing a unique listening experience for orchestras and audiences alike.
