Sarah Shin*

BIOGRAPHY

*PR Artist | Ariel AVANT

Sarah Shin is expanding the possibilities of classical music with a voice distinctly her own. Described as “sparkling” and with “technique at breakneck speed” by The Ludwigsburg Kreiszeitung, the Korean-American flutist imbues her work with refined musicianship, playful sophistication, and interpretive depth, delivering performances that are joyfully resonant, authentic, and alive.

She has performed in leading concert halls across the United States, Europe, and Asia, including Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Symphony Hall, the John F. Kennedy Center, Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Stiftung Mozarteum’s Großer Saal, Musikverein Wien, Schönbrunn Palace, Tonhalle Zürich, and Lotte Concert Hall in Seoul. Her solo appearances with orchestra include performances with the Budapest MAV Symphony Orchestra, Savaria Symphony Orchestra, Prague Radio Chamber Orchestra, Szolnok Symphony Orchestra, and Stuttgart Philharmonic, with international touring engagements spanning Austria, Germany, and Hungary. Her performance career has also extended beyond the traditional concert hall, most notably a 2023 Met Gala appearance alongside Lizzo.

Her 2023 debut solo album for Sony Classical, Mozart Concertos for Flute and Orchestra Nos. 1 & 2, features conductor Christian Schulz and members of the Savaria Symphony Orchestra. Reflecting her meticulous yet deeply personal approach to interpretation, Shin seeks to “get to the heart” (15 Questions) of Mozart’s music, bringing her own perspective to the canon through original cadenzas.

That same instinct for authorship and collaboration extends into her chamber work. Shin is a founding member of Fischoff quarterfinalist Emissary Quartet, a flute quartet celebrated for its commitment to new music. Since its founding, the quartet has commissioned new works that expand the repertoire for flute quartet and developed ambitious programs around them. In 2026, the ensemble released its debut album, [moment]um, with Orchid Classics. She is also a founding member of the newly formed Trio Candesco, a flute, viola, and harp trio with violist Jessica Thompson and harpist Jacqueline Kerrod. Formed at Princeton University, this new endeavor reflects Shin’s commitment to bringing high-level artists together around distinctive repertoire and shared discovery. Her commitment to expanding the flute’s repertoire continues into her solo work, including Watercolors, a new work for flute and piano by Korean composer and Guggenheim Fellow Juri Seo. The commission will receive its world premiere in the 2026/27 season.

Shin is Lecturer of Flute at Princeton University and serves on the faculty of Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts Community Arts program. She has given masterclasses and workshops at institutions including Seoul National University, Carnegie Mellon University, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, and the University of Virginia Flute Forum, and is a featured artist on Tonebase Flute. She was named the Martha Graham Dance Company’s 2023 Trailblazing Woman of the Arts and has served in leadership roles with the New Jersey Flute Society as President and the National Flute Association Convention as the 2024 Assistant Program Chair, where she worked closely with Program Chair Alberto Amarza.

A native of Ames, Iowa, she made her concerto debut at age 16 with the Central Iowa Symphony Orchestra. Her early musical studies with Dr. Sonja Giles led to further study at Walnut Hill School for the Arts with Judy Grant before she went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts with honors in Flute Performance from Carnegie Mellon University School of Music, where she studied with Jeanne Baxtresser. She continued her studies with Thomas Robertello at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, earning a Master of Music in Flute Performance, and with Bart Feller at Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts, where she earned a Doctor of Musical Arts. Shin is a William S. Haynes Artist and performs on a custom handmade Haynes 14k white gold flute.
