Coinciding with their debut CD i am not (from the New Amsterdam label) and featuring the music of New York composers Jason Treuting, Caleb Burhans, Angélica Negrón, Anna Clyne, Cameron Britt and Ryan Brown, “i am not” is tailored specifically for janus. The electrifying and revelatory results challenge the listener at every turn: As the group flits effortlessly between genres, it conjures a sound-world that is untethered yet consistent, classic yet definitively 21st century. In this way, “i am not” manages to defy the long-held Debussy-ian idioms that typify flute/viola/harp music. Further pushing the trio into this unusual landscape is a deft use of sonic devices such as glass bottles, electronics, banjo and voice.
About the CD i am not, Minnesota Public Radio/American Public Media’s Alison Young writes, “Janus has a sound that transports and floats over a pulsating beat. It’s blissful stuff.” Ashalen Sims from NPR’s Deceptive Cadence hails, “The music is at once strange and intimate, with a wealth of unusual sounds….The effect is hypnotic.” Earthy and introspective, “i am not” is a fluidly formed and cohesive artistic whole woven together from nine unique designs.
