School outreach is a specialty of the Bryant Park Quartet. The BPQ offers a variety of exciting lecture/demonstration programs designed to teach students about classical music and about the string quartet as an ensemble. Grade school students will be thrilled and inspired by the intensity and skill of these musicians, and will love interacting with the group to learn about the music, the various instruments, and how ensemble playing works.

The Bryant Park Quartet has the experience and flexibility to work with the needs of both student and teacher to create a fun, memorable, and very educational program. Please see the workshops below to get a sense of the extraordinary range and diversity of the BPQ’s educational offerings, which can be customized to fit any school’s needs.

Outreach Offerings for General Classroom Students

One-Day Workshop
• One school
• Three 50-minute presentations for 3 different classes/grade groups*
• Presentations will feature performance, interactive demonstrations, and discussions that aim to:
1. Introduce the instruments of the string quartet/classical chamber music
2. Provide students with tools for listening to classical music
3. Provide historical and aural context to the works performed by the quartet

Two-Day Workshop
• Three 50-minute presentations per day, focusing on different age groups within one school or one age group at multiple schools*
• Interactive performance/presentations will focus on:
1. Introducing the instruments of the string quartet/classical chamber music
2. Providing students with tools for listening to classical music
3. Providing historical and aural context to the works performed by the quartet
• One school option: more extensive interaction with students and additional musical exposure over two days. For example, the BPQ could give one large group presentation, and then follow up with paired sessions with smaller groups of students, each seeing two BPQ members at a time. This provides students with an up-close look at each instrument, and the BPQ the opportunity to introduce more advanced concepts.
• Two school option: BPQ visits two schools, essentially combining two “One Day Workshops”

Week-Long Residency
• This residency can include interactive presentations at several schools, underprivileged after-school programs, and/or community music programs.
• A free community performance by the BPQ at the conclusion of this residency, preferably after school hours with parents and community members encouraged to attend.
• The “One Day Workshop” and “Two Day Workshop” presentation models could be utilized at more schools, or a wider age range within each school could be reached.

* For all large group presentations, the group size can range from 25-250 students. However, because presentations are tailored to the age of the student, the age range within any one presentation should not be any wider than 2 grade levels.
